Gross Reservoir Expansion Project

5/13/22

As a reminder, Denver Water has temporarily closed all recreation access to Gross Reservoir as contractors build access improvements on the north side of the reservoir ahead of the upcoming boating season. These improvements are needed to accommodate the shift in recreation access due to closures on the south side of the reservoir for the duration of the project.

Work during the closure will include a new parking area, trail handrails, improvements to trail and access road surfacing, boat ramp construction and new signage.

As the project moves forward, there will also be periodic on-water recreation closures to ensure recreationist safety. Such closures will be temporary, and we will make every effort to alert the public to closures ahead of time. We encourage visitors to the reservoir to check the project website, grossreservoir.org, or Google My Map for information on access and construction activities.

Beginning this week, Denver Water will close all recreation access to Gross Reservoir as contractors build access improvements on the north side of the reservoir ahead of the upcoming boating season. These improvements are needed to accommodate the shift in recreation access due to closures on the south side of the reservoir for the duration of the project.

The full recreation closure will occur in phases:

  • A full closure will occur May 4 through the afternoon of May 6 to prepare for work.
  • Recreation access on the north side of the reservoir will reopen for the weekend of May 7-8.
  • A full closure will begin again May 9 and is expected to be in place until May 20.

Work during the closure will include a new parking area, trail handrails, improvements to trail and access road surfacing, boat ramp construction and new signage.

Dam foundation preparation, quarrying and site preparation activities involving drilling and blasting are scheduled to begin at Gross Reservoir on April 12. These activities will take place near the dam and at the on-site quarry located near the former Osprey Point Boat Launch, as well as at on-site access roads and staging areas. Please note:

  • Blasting will only take place during daylight hours.
  • Drilling and blasting activities are weather-dependent.

To ensure safety for all, crews will clear a safety zone prior to all blasting activities. This will result in some road- and recreation-related closures.

Prior to the blast, there will be a series of audible warning signals (shown below) to notify workers and the public to clear the area. We ask that those recreating at Gross Reservoir be aware of these signals and follow all instructions for safety.

Blasting schedules will be posted along Gross Dam Road; please see the project My Map for precise locations. We will also regularly update this map with blasting schedules and strongly encourage those planning to visit Gross Reservoir to check this resource prior to traveling to the area.

Denver water has provided on update for its planned route for the Gross Reservoir project. There will be no project-related trucks on Highway 72 west of Gross Dam Road. All of the project haul traffic will be coming in from Highway 93 to Highway 72, and will then use Crescent Park Drive to Gross Dam Road until the intersection improvements at Highway 72 and Gross Dam Road are complete.
