PLANNING COMMISSION ROLE

The Gilpin County Planning Commission is a nine-member board appointed by the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) for the purpose of planning and plan review. They are advisory to the BoCC on all matters concerning land use and land subdivision. The Planning Commission is charged with the formulation and revision of comprehensive master plans, zoning regulations, subdivision regulations and special use permit conditions. They also conduct site-specific plan reviews associated with all of the above. The Planning Commission typically makes a recommendation on a land use case which is then sent to the Board of County Commissioners for a final decision.

Typically, Planning Commission review is done in three phases. Review often begins with a conceptual discussion of a proposal relative to its consistency with Gilpin County Comprehensive Plan goals and objectives. If found to be consistent with Comprehensive Plan goals and objectives, a more detailed review for consistency with County policy and regulation will follow. The final review phase includes a public hearing where any interested party may comment for the record. All meetings are open to the public, but if you wish to address the commission you must first give your name and address for the meeting minutes. Written comments are also accepted.

PLANNING COMMISSION MEETINGS

The agenda for the next meeting is typically posted on the Gilpin County website the Friday prior to the meeting. All meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilpin Old Courthouse unless otherwise noted on the agenda. Meetings may be canceled or rescheduled due to lack of business or poor weather. Special meetings may also be called.

If you have any questions regarding the next meeting, please contact Community Development Department staff at (303) 582-5831. Extra meeting material/handouts are typically available at the meeting on a first come, first serve basis. If you would like a copy of the material sent to the Planning Commission, please email  [email protected] to make such a request. Material is typically sent to the Planning Commission on the Friday prior to the meeting, and can be forwarded to you upon receipt of your emailed request, but only after the material has been sent to the Planning Commission. An ADA accessible entrance is located from the back parking lot, which is accessible from West 1st High Street. General parking can be found in the Courthouse lot or in the Teller lot across the street from the Courthouse, when the opera is not in session.

Public hearings are officially noticed in the Weekly-Register Call. Property owners adjacent to the proposed subject site are notified.

Any contact of a Planning Commissioner regarding any case or proposal should be made during the public meeting or through staff prior to the meeting.
